Blazer411 • UAB Electronic Phonebook

The following is a list of common situations encountered when using the UAB Electronic Phonebook:

If none of these apply to your specific circumstance, please contact us at AskIT@uab.edu.

I want to put my e-mail address in the Phonebook.

You can have an e-mail address listed by registering an BlazerID in the Phonebook. Note that when you do this, your alias-based address, e.g. johndoe@uab.edu, will be listed rather than your real mailbox. This ensures people will get an address for you that is unlikely to change, even if you move to another mail server.

If you are already registered in the Phonebook but your e-mail address does not appear, or if you need to change your real mailbox address, you can use the Change Information function in the Phonebook to update your entry.

I have forgotten my BlazerID/Phonebook password.

You can set a new password by using the Change BlazerID Password screen.

The information shown for me is wrong.

Any information in the Phonebook which is not provided by you (via the Change Information or View/Update Profile function) is downloaded from official UAB records databases. These records are used for a number of other purposes, so we cannot allow you to directly modify these fields in the Phonebook. If we did, that would leave the other records still inaccurate and result in the Phonebook not reflecting official UAB data.

If you are a student, the Registrar's Office maintains your records. You may make changes to your address, phone number, class, major or degree information by logging in to BlazerNET. To change your name, you must present your Social Security Card reflecting your new name in person at One Stop Student Services, HSC 103. For further assistance, you may contact the One Stop at (205) 934-4300 or onestop@uab.edu or visit our office in HSC 103.

If you are a UAB employee, your information such as office location and phone/FAX numbers, department, and job title, is provided to the Phonebook from the Oracle HR system. Updates must be submitted to Oracle via an ACT data change document initiated by your department's personnel officer. For more information, please see the Campus Directory Update page.

If you are an HSF employee, your information is provided to the Phonebook from the Lawson system. In order to make changes to your information, please contact the Human Resource Center as described on the Campus Directory Update page.

If you are a UAB Health System employee, or work for any of the UAB Health System affiliates such as VIVA, Callahan Eye Foundation, and so on, you should contact the appropriate Human Resources office.

I do not want my phone number listed.

As a student, your directory information is published in the Electronic Phonebook in accordance with the Family and Privacy Act of 1974, as outlined in Section IV of UAB's Student Records Policy. If you request this information NOT be published by submitting the waiver form as described, then your entry in the Phonebook will be suppressed, and only you will be able to view its contents.

A less drastic solution is now available, where you can suppress just your phone number and leave the rest of your entry available for display. If you use the Change Information or View/Update Profile function and supply Contact Information (even if it just says "None"), then that will override your phone number.

I want to change my BlazerID/alias.

As noted in the Phonebook registration instructions, it is very difficult (if not impossible) to change a BlazerID/Phonebook alias once it has been set. The BlazerID is used for authentication by a number of services, as well as the forwarding mechanism for your @uab.edu e-mail. If your BlazerID changes, then all these services have to be changed as well; and all e-mail to your former @uab.edu address becomes undeliverable, creating headaches for your correspondents and the maintainers of any discussion lists to which you belong. If you simply desire a new @uab.edu address, you can accommoplish this by registering a mail-only alias, as described here.

My ID/DOB is not found in your records.

We assume this error was displayed when you were trying to register your BlazerID. The first thing to do is be sure you are entering a valid ID number, which must be either your 7-digit Oracle employee number; or your Banner student ID (letter B followed by 8 digits); or your 9-digit xxx-xx-xxxx government-assigned ID; or the 999-xx-xxxx ID assigned to you by UAB.

If you are a new UAB student, we recommend contacting One Stop Student Services at onestop@uab.edu or (205) 934-4300, to verify you are using the expected student ID number and/or see where are in the admissions process.

If you are a new UAB employee who started work within the past couple of weeks, it is possible that your paperwork is still being processed to get you activated in an HR database. The best course of action is try again tomorrow and see if the paperwork cleared overnight.

If you continue to be unable to register your BlazerID after 7 to 10 days following your start date, or in particular if you are concerned about how you will be getting paid or setting up benefits, please check with your department's HR administrator to verify you are using the expected employee ID number and/or see where are you in the hiring workflow and if they have an estimated time when your paperwork will be completed.

If by some chance this all does not seem applicable to your situation, please contact us by e-mail at AskIT@uab.edu for individual assistance.

My search keeps failing with "too many results".

The Electronic Phonebook is configured so that it will return no more than 25 matches for a given search. This limit exists to make it difficult for the Phonebook to be used for unscrupulous purposes, such as mass e-mailing (often known as spamming), and is set in accordance with the UAB Information Disclosure Policy of December 10, 2002 (available online in PDF format). If you have not already done so, you may want to try pulling down the search box which normally says "all listings", and change it so you match only employees or students, as appropriate.
